 Chapter 1

Towards the end of July, it was a time of unbearable summer heat.

In the Yan family estate, a small party was being held. The swimming pool was brightly lit, and occasional bursts of laughter and cheer could be heard.

In the central villa's living room, a young man with a foil-permed hairstyle suddenly spat out the beer in his mouth and stood up, "What?! Second brother, you're no longer single?"

Sitting across from him, Yan Sui leaned back on the sofa, "Yes, I've been pursuing her for half a year, and Zhangke finally agreed to be with me."

He looked somewhat proud, but then shyly touched the tip of his nose.

"Half a year? You hid it from us pretty well, we haven't heard a single whisper about it all this time," said Liu Cong, the young man with the foil-permed hairstyle, as he turned to look at the person next to him.

"Third brother, did you know about this?" he asked Xu Bin.

Xu Bin shook his head and shrugged his shoulders.

Liu Cong then looked towards the dark-haired young man sitting in the corner and asked, "Fourth, you're the closest to Second brother, did you know about this?"

Yu Li was mentioned, and he snapped out of his thoughts, shaking his head with a smile.

He had only found out about it yesterday as well.

Seeing this, Liu Cong exchanged a glance with Xu Bin next to him, and then pounced on Yan Sui.

"Good one, Second brother! You've really kept us, your brothers, in the dark!"

Yan Sui let out a hearty laugh as he evaded their hands, "Isn't it better to just announce it after we're already together?"

"Don't be mad, don't be mad, save your energy for the party later. There'll be plenty for you to enjoy then."

In the corner of the sofa, Yu Li quietly watched the three men's playful banter.

Under the bright lights, the smile on his lips was slightly bitter.

Yu Li had been secretly in love with Yan Sui for three years now.

His roommate Yan Sui, from a distinguished family, was handsome and outgoing. There were countless people in school who liked him.

But Yu Li's affection for Yan Sui wasn't because of those external qualities, but because Yan Sui was so good to him, so caring.

Academically, whenever Yu Li needed any resources, Yan Sui would be the first to provide them. In daily life, noticing Yu Li's humble family circumstances, Yan Sui would discreetly help him. When Yu Li fell ill, Yan Sui was the first to notice and even stayed with him overnight at the hospital.

With Yan Sui being so good to him, how could Yu Li not develop feelings?

For these three years, Yu Li had been hiding his affection.

And now, Yan Sui had a girlfriend, so it seemed this unspoken love of his had to come to an end.

Yu Li lowered his gaze, looking at the can of beer in front of him.

He had never tried alcohol before, but he knew many people would drink to drown their sorrows when troubled.

He felt an inexplicable urge to give it a try, to see if it really worked.

Yu Li reached out and picked up the can of beer, just about to open it, when he heard the sound of the villa's main door being opened.

The three men who were just playfully bickering also stopped and turned towards the door in unison.

A tall, upright figure strode in, his leather shoes echoing on the marble tiles.

He was dressed in a crisp black suit, his hairstyle fixed with gel slightly loosened after a long day, a strand falling across his forehead.

Perched on his high-bridged nose were a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, but they could not conceal the sharp, cold gaze in his eyes.

Those handsome, hawk-like eyes casually swept across the four men in the living room, and when they passed over Yu Li, Yu Li grew nervous, his heart beating faster, the fingers gripping the can of beer tightening.

Under that gaze, Yan Sui hurriedly stood up straight. "Brother!"

Liu Cong and Xu Bin also quickly stabilized their posture and greeted, "Good evening, Big Brother."

Holding the beer, Yu Li timidly looked up at Yan Sui's older brother, Yan Shiting, then quickly lowered his gaze.

His voice was soft, but clear enough, "Elder Brother Yan."

"Mm." Yan Shiting nodded slightly.

He opened his thin lips, his voice icy, "A party?"

Yan Sui stepped forward, putting on a smile. "Yes, it's a party to celebrate me no longer being single."

He thought for a moment, then explained, "Brother, we'll be going to the pool area to play soon, don't worry, we won't disturb you."

Yan Shiting didn't say anything. He just furrowed his brows as he glanced at the beers on the table, his gaze finally landing on the can Yu Li had just opened.

"Drink less."

He tossed out these words devoid of any emotion and then turned to head upstairs.

Yan Sui smiled and said, "I know, Brother."

Only after Yan Shiting's figure disappeared around the staircase corner did Yu Li's heart that had been raised finally settle back down.

Liu Cong and Xu Bin deflated like balloons, letting out an exaggerated sigh.

"Whew, Second brother, your big brother is so terrifying."

"Every time I see him, I don't even dare to breathe."

"Is this the aura of an overlord?"

Yan Sui rubbed the back of his head, "Not at all, my big brother is actually a nice person."

Liu Cong teased, "Then why did you react so strongly when you saw him?"

"Conditioned reflex, conditioned reflex."

Yan Sui waved his hand, "Let's go, let's head to the poolside."

The party Yan Sui was hosting to celebrate no longer being single was centered around the swimming pool area.

However, after all three of his roommates had arrived, he had called them to gather in the living room first to officially announce his relationship news.

Liu Cong stepped forward and slung an arm around Yan Sui's shoulder, eagerly saying, "The girlfriend must be by the pool, introduce her to us later, will you?"

"Of course."

Yan Sui turned and looked at Yu Li, "Xiao Li, come along."

Yu Li's body jolted, and he put down the can of beer in his hand and got up to follow the three.

By the poolside, Yu Li sat at a bar table, his gaze fixed on Yan Sui in the center of the crowd.

Yan Sui was now holding hands with his girlfriend, introducing her to each of his friends.

As Yan Sui's closest friend at the moment, Yu Li had already met his girlfriend before.

Yan Sui's girlfriend was the heiress of the Xu family - Xu Zhangke, a beautiful and gracious young woman.

The moment Yu Li saw her, he couldn't help but think that she and Yan Sui made a perfect match, a true soulmate pair.

Lost in thought, someone sat down next to Yu Li.

"Hey, I think I've seen you somewhere before. Are you Yan Sui's roommate?" The man propped his chin on his right hand, looking at Yu Li with interest.

Snapping out of his thoughts, Yu Li turned to look at the newcomer.

The man had a slightly flirtatious look, wearing a silk black shirt with the top two buttons undone, revealing the pendant of a necklace - he had the air of a charming ladies' man.

Giving him a quick glance, Yu Li averted his gaze. "Yes."

The man raised an eyebrow, "Weren't you at a party at the Yan family's before?"

Yu Li nodded and gave a soft "Mm" in response.

Not deterred by Yu Li's lack of interest, the man continued, "Then we might have met at that party. I'm Shen Rui, Yan Sui's childhood friend."

"I noticed Yan Sui was quite attentive to you, so you two seem to have a good relationship."

Yu Li replied, "It's alright."

Sensing his indifference, Shen Rui chuckled and didn't say anything further.

Yu Li turned his gaze back to Yan Sui.

Over there, something one of the friends had said had suddenly made Xu Zhangke shyly cover her face, leaning against Yan Sui's shoulder.

And Yan Sui had his arm around her in a protective, cherishing embrace.

Yu Li understood, Yan Sui must truly like this Xu family heiress.

He knew Yan Sui had been pursuing Xu Zhangke for over half a year, yet hadn't breathed a word about it.

- Because the Xu family's background was not as prestigious as the Yan family's, Yan Sui was worried that being too overt about the process would result in Xu Zhangke being the target of gossip if things didn't work out in the end.

From the very beginning, he had treasured Xu Zhangke.

Watching the affectionate young couple, Yu Li finally averted his gaze.

It was time for him to let go of his own feelings.

"They really do make a perfect match, a match made in heaven," Shen Rui next to him suddenly sighed.

Yu Li looked at him.

Shen Rui shifted his gaze from Yan Sui back to Yu Li, smiling, "Yan Sui and Xu Zhangke, right?"

Yu Li's throat felt bitter.

But he still nodded, "Yes."

On one side of the bar were several bottles of alcohol - beer, red wine, and champagne.

Suddenly, Yu Li remembered the can of beer he had opened but not yet drunk.

He still wanted to try if alcohol could really drown his sorrows, so he reached out towards a bottle of beer.

Seeing this, Shen Rui grabbed his wrist, "Want to drink? There's nothing special about beer."

It might have been Yu Li's imagination, but he felt like the other man's fingers caressed his wrist for a moment.

Luckily, Shen Rui quickly withdrew his hand and said politely, "You don't seem like much of a drinker. If you want to try, you shouldn't go for beer, it's not very good."

He smiled, "Over there, someone is mixing drinks. I'll go get you a glass."

"No..."

Shen Rui's enthusiasm was unexpected.

And Yu Li really didn't know how to handle such an enthusiastic person. Before he could finish refusing, the man had already walked towards the bartender.

Soon, Shen Rui returned with a pink ombré cocktail.

"Give it a try, it's sweet."

The drink was quite visually appealing, with bubbles on the glass wall and pink ice cubes at the bottom.

On this hot summer night, it was tempting to take a sip.

Since the drink was already brought over and Shen Rui was Yan Sui's childhood friend, Yu Li didn't know how to find a reason to refuse.

For him, refusing others was a difficult thing, let alone refusing someone he "knew".

He could only take a sip, and as Shen Rui said, it was indeed sweet.

"Good, right?" Shen Rui asked.

Since he was being so enthusiastic, Yu Li didn't want to ignore him anymore, so he nodded, "Thank you."

Shen Rui then opened a beer and a bottle of champagne, saying, "Try these two as well, compare the flavors, I bet the cocktail is better."

Yu Li took a sip of each.

Just as Shen Rui had said, the taste of the beer and champagne were not as good as the mixed cocktail.

But Yu Li didn't know that drinking these mixed drinks would very easily lead to intoxication, especially since it was his first time drinking.

Without realizing it, Yu Li started feeling a bit dizzy.

His face flushed red, and the people in front of him were starting to blur together.

Yet Shen Rui kept bringing him new drinks, "Try this one as well..."

Yu Li couldn't find the words to refuse, and took another sip.

In his hazy state, he felt like someone had been watching him from afar.

He turned his head, and aside from the playful crowd, the only thing he saw was the balcony on the third floor of the villa. 

But the balcony was empty.

Perhaps he was just hallucinating from drinking too much.

Yu Li shifted his gaze back, and saw Shen Rui bringing him another blue cocktail.

Yu Li furrowed his brows, "I think I'm drunk, I can't drink anymore."

"People who are truly drunk always say they're not drunk. Since you're saying you're drunk, it seems you're still not drunk enough." Shen Rui chuckled, handing him the drink, "Just one last sip, give it a try."

Yu Li pressed his lips together and didn't take the glass.

Seeing this, Shen Rui didn't push him further, and turned to look at Yan Sui and Xu Zhangke.

"Although they're all second-generation wealthy, Yan Sui is different from the rest of us. In all these years, he's never had any woman by his side."

"Now he's throwing such a grand announcement party, it seems he really loves this Xu Zhangke."

Shen Rui's words stabbed Yu Li's heart.

He still felt so pained, it seemed he hadn't drunk enough to let go.

Biting his lip, Yu Li suddenly snatched the glass from Shen Rui's hand and downed it in one gulp.

Shen Rui watched in surprise, and as Yu Li swayed unsteadily, he leaned in close and softly said:

"It seems I was right, you and I are the same kind of person."

Yu Li's mind was in a haze: "What do you mean?"

"That you like men." 

Shen Rui curled his lips in a smile, "I've noticed, you like Yan Sui, don't you."

Those nonchalant words hit Yu Li like a thunderclap.

Yu Li's mind cleared slightly, and he pushed Shen Rui away with a cold expression, "I don't."

With that, Yu Li ran towards the villa.

Behind him, Shen Rui looked at the empty glass, the corners of his mouth curving upwards in an ambiguous manner.

He watched Yu Li's retreating back and leisurely followed after him, as if determined to succeed.

In the first-floor bathroom of the villa, Yu Li was bracing himself against the sink, feeling dizzy.

He turned on the tap and splashed some water on his face, but his muddled mind didn't clear much.

His body still felt hot - was this the typical reaction of being drunk? It was quite unpleasant.

Yu Li bit his lip, trying to sober up, when he caught sight of Shen Rui also entering the bathroom out of the corner of his eye.

Leaning against the doorframe, Shen Rui eyed Yu Li lewdly, "Little beauty, what are you running for after what we were discussing?"

Yu Li's limbs felt weak and his head clouded, unable to muster a response.

He swayed a bit, and Shen Rui took the opportunity to step closer, grabbing his arm and whispering in his ear, "I know you're feeling uncomfortable right now. How about you come with me, I can make you feel better..."

Before he could finish, a cold voice came from not far away, "What are you doing?"

Shen Rui was startled, hastily releasing Yu Li and turning around to see Yan Shiting standing in the hallway about two meters away, his expression grim.

"Yan, Mr. Yan."
